Thoughts on Freedom

The inpiration for this post comes from Write on Edge, The prompt: "This week, your prompt is a simple concept that can be fraught with complication.
You have 400 words to write a fiction or creative non-fiction piece about freedom, in any way that makes sense to you."

Freedom? Well I’d love to sit here and tell you I’ve spent the entire week thinking about the freedoms I enjoy as an American. Though, honestly, this word entered my mind as almost a foreign concept. As I began to potty train my little girl I realized a piece of my freedom was and will be put in jeopardy for awhile. I’ve been feeling trapped and little bit lonely. Today I went to the Dr. to check on my progress with baby number two. After explaining a few symptoms I’ve been having my Dr. warned me to take it easy, put my feet up and rest more. One may think this sounds like the perfect prescription, yet I left the office feeling another piece of my freedom flutter away. I wondered how I was suppose to go any slower than the slothful pace at which I am currently living. I’ve slacked off on making dinner, not entirely, but mostly. My husband has had to do a lot of grocery store runs.

“What are we out of?” He’ll ask.

My unfailing response, “Everything.”
The house is usually in disarray and my workouts have been tapered back significantly. My blog, my writing and my creativity have even taken a hit.  Meanwhile, I kept thinking, how can I manage a two year old and simultaneously take it easy. Is it possible? Oh Freedom, how I miss thee.

  1. Oh Lindy...I completely understand this. I stayed at home for a while and I remember being pregnant the last time and feeling trapped in the house...by morning sickness, heat, nausea, fatigue. However, now that I'm a working mommy I miss being able to be there with my kids. I see them for a few hours each night and every other weekend...it's just not enough. Freedom (and your creativity) will be back before you know it. I promise. :)

  2. HI Love...First I had no idea you were pregnant, CONGRATULATIONS and I'm so sorry for not knowing before this. (BAD Kir)

and I think that while it's true, that freedom is at a minimum in your life right now, that's true of most of us as moms, even when we are "baking the baby". I remember thinking that bed rest was a blessing and a curse...and it was.

please take care of yourself and know that if you slow down, you'll be RUNNING soon enough. Sometimes letting go of the Freedom for awhile makes it's resurrgence that much sweeter later ;)

    thinking of you.....

  3. It's funny how something that is supposed to be relaxing and like freedom turns out to be more confining because of the restrictions you have to place on yourself to achieve it.

Congrats on being pregnant and good luck w/ the two year old.

  4. Just a different kind of freedom, that's all. At least that's how I try to look at it. I still haven't convinced myself, but I keep trying!

As for your creativity, it'll definitely come back with the baby. ;-)

  6. Ugh, I hope you can figure out a balance. I remember those difficult days trying to balance pregnancy, a young child, household requirements PLUS I worked.

Sounds like you have an awesome husband there to support you. Just remember, this is but a blip. Soon enough you will be past this point and onto the next challenge :)

  7. I don't have another child, but I can sympathize somewhat with the pregnancy restrictions part. And I've been lucky enough to not have too many of those beyond the ususal ones. Good luck and just think how busy you'll be as soon as the little one is born!

  8. Oh, that's tough! I taught while pregnant, and my doctor would say, "You HAVE to sit and put your feet up for XXX minutes at a time," and I knew full well that wasn't possible. Try to take it easy and know that none of those restrictions are forever.

Oh, I was where you are just a short time ago. I had two little boys and a belly full of baby and it was HARD. So many days, dinner was beyond me - hell, ensuring I left the house with pants on was a full-time concern!

Freedom, of course, is not the result when a baby arrives but certain liberties return. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. xx

  10. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and know that this too shall pass. At least that's what Grandma used to say. Other than that I got nothing, not being a mother or even planning on motherhood. If there's something I've learned about you though, it's that you are a very strong and intelligent person, and there's nothing you can't do.
